Mittens and More

Mittens have been the focus of our activities this week.  We read the book The Mitten by Jan Brett on Monday.  This book is about a little boy who loses his mitten in the snow.  A variety of animals such as a hedgehog, a mole, a fox, a rabbit, a bear, and a mouse squeeze into the mitten.  When the bear sneezes, all the animals go flying out of the mitten.  The little boy is then able to retrieve his mitten and head back home.  We have been working on activities related to this book for the past two days.  A few number recognition and counting activities have been sprinkled in among our mitten activities as well.

Tuesday morning work: number writing practice.

Pledging our allegiance to the flag and the United States of America!

At one of our centers on Tuesday the students began working on their 'Who's hiding under my mitten' activity.  They colored and cut out a mitten and then we stapled it onto their paper. Then they strengthened their fine motor skills by peeling the backs off of foam sticker snowflakes and sticking them on either side of their mitten.

At another center, the students had fun using props to recreate The Mitten.  The students stuffed small plastic animals inside of mittens to help retell the story.  They also had fun finding matching mitten pairs and trying them on.

Our third center on Tuesday included number recognition and counting practice. The students at this center took turns rolling the die, counting what number they rolled, and using a paint dotter to stamp the corresponding number on their paper.  The students really excelled at this activity!

After we finished our centers on Tuesday, we had another opportunity to recreate the story told in the book The Mitten.  The students took turns being the animals from the book and as we sang a song related to the book the students squeezed into our mitten shape located on the carpet.  After all of the animals (students) squeezed into the mitten, the 'bear' sneezed and everyone tumbled out of the mitten.

On Wednesday, at one of our centers, we continued working on our 'Who's hiding under my mitten?' activity.  The students looked through Zoobooks magazines to find the animal they wanted to hide under their mitten.  After they cut out the animal and glued it onto their paper, they wrote the name of their animal.  Some of the students chose to write their animal name as they believed it sounded, while some students preferred to know the exact spelling of their animal.  Either way, this was a great opportunity for us to work on our letter sound skills.

At another center, the students worked on their February calendar which will come home on Friday.

Our third center; Legos!
