F is for February

Today we talked about the letter Ff and the sound it represents.  We had fun realizing that February begins with the letter F.  Then someone pointed out the F also stands for football, which made for interesting conversation about who watched the Super Bowl and who did not.  The children excitedly chatted about who in their family liked watching football.  After we talked about February and football, we practiced recognizing the letter F and making the /f/ sound.  We then enjoyed our three centers for the day which included an Ff collage, a number recognition activity, and playing with Fuzzoodles on the carpet.

The students used fish and feathers to create an Ff collage.

At the number recognition center, the students used a key at the bottom of their paper to place the correct color sticker on each number.

After centers we read an F story about 'Friendly' the 'Frog' and his 'friend' 'Fancy' 'Fish' who saved 'five' 'foxes' from a 'forest' 'fire'.  We then sequenced our story and each 'friend' took a turn coloring one thing on our storyboard that began with the letter F .
